Roma and Sinti people in the world of work
organised by ARCI Liguria
Putting ourselves in the other person’s shoes to reduce distances to break prejudices and break stereotypes: this is what we did during last Monday’s seminar.
We did it, first, by focusing on some cultural aspects, which are essential to understand the specific needs of Roma people and build a cognitive frame that is actually accessible and understandable for them.
We started with the concept of time, to be understood always and only as “here and now.”
Then, we challenged ourselves with a role-play simulating a job interview, trying to understand what it feels like to be labeled before you even open your mouth. Because sometimes all it takes is a first or last name or residential address (if it matches a formal settlement) to be told “we’ll let you know” and have no chance to show your worth.
Thanks to Carla Cappanera, Hero’s Trainer and Senior Expert, and Valentina Revello, Project Social Worker, for conducting the workshop with expertise and passion.
And thank you to all the people who participated and to the representation of the institutions involved in job and housing placement who, with their presence, contributed to make this seminar a meaningful experience and to give the project a perspective of sustainability.
